Vegatable Gardening

This year, I want to get into some SERIOUS vegatable gardening! (No, your eyes don't deceive you...I am spelling the word 'vegetable' wrong on purpose, as a way to embrace the joys of imperfection in gardening! Sometimes we achieve the best results as gardeners when we make mistakes, don't we? Vegetable...vegatable...vegtable...let's stop the spelling, and let's get to the gardening! :)

So let's talk about SERIOUS gardening! I’m not talking vegatable gardening for wimps, I’m talking major, we’ll be eating most of our meals from the garden, vegtable gardening!

Ok, so I’m being a little dramatic. But I do want to significantly expand on the vegatable gardening that I already do every year. I have one garden already established in the backyard, and last year I added another garden in the front of the house. There’s a very sunny location close to the road which is just perfect for my vegtable gardening extravaganza!!

The mail order gardening catalog that I’ve decided to order from this year is Henry Fields (opens new window).

Why did I choose them? I think because of the exceptionally large selection of fruits and veggies to choose from in their catalog. Although I have to be honest...I’m ordering online! It’s just so much easier!

The Henry Fields mail order gardening catalog is just fabulous for vegatable gardening enthusiasts, or beginners like myself.

I guess I’m not completely a beginner, but I want to move beyond some of the old stand-bys that I’m used to. I routinely grow tomatoes, zucchini, potatoes, pumpkins, and peppers, but I want to expand a little.

So here’s what my vegtable gardening is going to entail this year:

Rubarb
Garlic
Marigolds
Beans
Cucumber
Lettuce
Cauliflower
Peanuts
– cool, hey? Never tried growing these before!
Onions
Peppers
Tomatoes
– of course
Broom Corn – used for decoration – check it out at Henry Fields!
Dwarf Pomegranate – for indoor use
Complete Strawberry Bed – this is awesome! I’ll definitely update this site with pictures of my strawberry bed as it develops. The complete bed comes with 50 strawberry plants, so I’ll be set with my strawberries for awhile.
Pumpkin
Winter Squash
Watermelon
Cantaloupe
Brussel Sprouts
– I tried this last year and it worked really well. I’m trying the purple variety this year.
Zucchini
Corn
– this will be interesting...the critters always seem to eat my corn before I can harvest it
Asparagus
Carmine Jewel Dwarf Cherry
– this is also an experiment, it’s supposed to be easy to grow...we shall see!
Beets – not usually a fan, but they’re described as delicious to ‘non-beet’ lovers
Cabbage
Spinach
Goji Berry Bush
– I’ve been waiting for this for a long time!
Ka-Bluey Blueberry Bushes – I want to get 3 more but they’re sold out. These suckers go fast, so get them while they’re hot!

As you can see, I’ll be VERY busy with my vegatable gardening this year!

If you’re interested in obtaining one of these mail order gardening catalogs to see what type of variety they offer, you can request one at the Henry Fields (opens new window) website.

And after you place your order, be sure to update us on your vegatable gardening 2009 adventure! I’d love to see some pictures here of your garden. I’ll post pictures of mine as soon as it starts to develop this year.

Is gardening season here yet??

I would be so delighted to receive pictures and stories about your own gardening adventures...including 'mistakes' that ended up working out in your favor! My gardening know-how came mostly from my Grandma, so I'm a firm believer in following the wisdom and experience of others. I'd love to hear what you'd like to share!
