Swimming Pool Vacuums

My favorite swimming pool vacuums are the ones that require no help from me in order to operate...or in other words...the Automatic Pool Cleaners (opens new window)! I think all backyard landscaping products and additions should be as "easy-breezy" as possible!

The one that I own now, in addition to the one that came with the purchase of my pool, is called a Baracuda!! I love to sing the song every time I start that baby up! (Everyone knows the song I’m talking about, right??)

Anywho...I’m not going to get all technical with you on the ins and outs of how this sucker operates (mostly because I have no clue exactly how it operates), but suffice it to say, it has this little device that when attached to the skimmer, creates this sort of rhythmic sucking motion that motors the device around the pool, cleaning up debris as it comes across it.

The debris is then pulled through the skimmer and into the second basket of the filter system, which collects the larger debris, and is then pulled through the larger filter. Because I have a great deal of debris in my pool, I have to empty out the second filter quite frequently. Last year, I don’t think I vacuumed my pool at all by hand, instead leaving the dirty work to the Baracuda!!

Automatic swimming pool vacuums (opens new window) are available for any type of pool, and come in a variety of models and price ranges. When deciding on the model that is right for you, be sure to read through customer reviews before making any purchases. You want to be sure that the vacuum is such that it makes other users happy, that it’s easy to use, and that there isn’t a great deal to worry about as far as maintenance of the item.

Some models have a lot of different parts that can break or malfunction. I've seen vacuums that contain an independent filter system which means that the filter must be replaced, and sometimes items need replacement. Depending on where you’ve ordered the item, repair can be difficult.

My “Baracuda” is actually a Zodiac vacuum with Baracuda technology. Check out this comparison page to help make the right decision.

Good luck in your search for the best vacuum!

Happy Cleaning!
