Lawn fertilization:
How much and how often?

Is lawn fertilization really necessary and how often does fertilizer need to be applied? Scott’s produces a systems that allows for routine fertilization throughout the growing system, and deals with special lawn issues at the appropriate time.

For example, applying lawn fertilizer for the spring usually means the product is enhanced with weed, and particularly crabgrass, control. If you're unfamiliar with this noxious weed, it's the thick clumps of long blades that sort of look like grass, but spread out into huge, round, crop-circle lookin' things! Once crabgrass has been established it is difficult to eliminate during the season, however it can be effectively prevented if a weed control product is applied early in spring.

Fertilizer applied during the fall has a different focus than fertilizer applied during the spring. Grass is preparing to go dormant in the fall, so using a fertalizer which encourages a healthy root system ensures vigorous growth the following year.

Fertilization products usually come with instructions that are quite clear and easy to follow. Be sure to apply lawn fertilizer at the stated amount on the instructions, or slightly less. Over-fertilizing can result in burn spots throughout your lawn.

A better alternative in my opinion, however, is the use of Milorganite (opens new window). Milorganite is a popular lawn fertilizer which tends to be safer on the grass, and safer for children and pets. Milorganite is friendly to the environment and can be utilized on all outdoor plants. This fertilizer truly is an eco-friendly alternative to the highly chemical fertilizers available today, and is just as effective, if not more, in giving your lawn the nutrients it needs.

A healthy lawn needs iron to grow into a dense, thick carpet. Milorganite makes this iron available to your lawn as it is needed. Whereas other products sort of "dump" all of the fertilizer on the lawn at once, which can lead to over-fertilization and burning of the lawn, milorganite is such that the lawn only utilizes what it needs for heatlhy growth and development. Because of this, you don't need to worry about over-fertilizing your lawn with this product, as the lawn will not take in any unnecessary chemicals. It is also very easy to apply as it can be applied at any time, and does not need to be watered in order to be effective. Other fertilizers need to be applied to a moist lawn, or need to be watered immediately after application in order to get the maximum benefits.

Milorganite does not contain herbicide or weed killer, and works specifically by encouraging strong, healthy growth which is the trademark of a healthy lawn. A healthy, thick lawn creates its own defense against weeds as the weeds are crowded out by the grass.

Milorganite is a method of fertilization which is safe for children and pets! This is a big plus in my household! Milorganite provides natural, organic fertilization, and I highly recommend it in keeping your lawn healthy and happy.
