How to Water your Garden

Knowing how to water your garden is an important step in making sure all of your efforts pay off. You learned how to start a garden, and then how to layout a garden. You decided which vegetables to plant, and now you’re going to make sure those vegetables end up producing the crop that you hoped for by learning how to water your garden properly.

Your garden should receive water ideally once per day, and no less frequently than every other day, as long as it gets a good soaking. During the dry summer months when there’s only a sprinkle of rain every couple of weeks, and the ground is cracking, you should plan on watering your garden every night.

You'll want to monitor the frequency and amoung of waterings to your garden so that your plants receive the right amount of moisture, but not too much. There is no need to set up a sprinkler that runs for an extended period of time. Doing this will probably do more harm than good as your plants may have difficulty drying out, may get over watered and die, and may be more susceptible to disease from the moisture.

Get in the habit of watering your garden every evening. I spend no more than 5 minutes watering my garden plot that is approximately 4 feet by 18 feet. Once the water starts to pool on the ground, the plants have received enough.

Watering your gardening in the evening is a good idea because the water will stay on the ground much longer, and will then be available to the plants. If you water in the morning, or during the day, you will lose much of the water to evaporation.

Consider adding one or more rain water barrels to your yard to help reduce the cost of your water bill, and to do your part to help the environment. Rain water barrels are a great way to give your plants what they need, they blend into the environment well and can be painted for added interest to your landscape.

I hope this information helps you learn how to water your garden properly, and all of your vegetables grow and flourish rapidly as a result. Happy gardening!
