How to Plant Strawberries

Establishing a system for how to plant strawberries will be time will spent!! As I’m sure you know, there is little else that compares to sun-ripened strawberries eaten directly out of the garden. No supermarket can even come close to comparing to the sweetness!

When learning how to plant strawberries, or how to lay out a garden in general, it’s important to know that whatever design you go with, you will have to be prepared to utilize some type of netting system over your strawberry bed.

Learn how to plant strawberries with this raised bed system! You simply won’t be successful in harvesting your strawberries unless you have something to protect them from the wild life, and in particular, the birds! I had netting on my strawberry bed for only one year, and it has already been chewed in a number of different places.

The complete strawberry bed system that I purchased from Gurneys Seed and Nursery (opens new window) makes learning how to grow strawberries ridiculously easy and fool proof! (Since I’m the fool, that’s a good thing!)

Open this link and enter "Strawberry Bed" in the search box in the upper right hand corner (opens new window) to have the product pop up on your screen. I just ordered my first one last year, and have been through one complete season with it. The buds for the new year are already up, and slowly starting to flower.

This system was REALLY easy to assemble, and the strawberries are doing surprisingly well! I don’t always have the best of luck with mail-order plants, but the strawberry plants shipped well. They didn’t even get planted by me for a few days following shipment, and they are still doing well in their new home. In fact, come to think about it, I wasn’t even that careful with the type of soil I placed in the rings, and still, the strawberries survive. Amazing!

Srawberries actually take a few years to fully establish themselves, so your best crop won't be the first year or two. You'll have to control the numerous outshoots your plant produces, and probably cut many of them off. I have had many outshoots sprout off into the lawn, which I'll have to take care of this year. It's also important to keep up on the weeds that establish themselves between the plants.

The strawberry bed is actually a very simple design, but it seems to hold up nicely. I would recommend purchasing the netting system that comes with it as this will help make sure your strawberry plants are kept safe and sound.

If you’re new to gardening, and you’re not sure how to plant strawberries, this is a great beginners kit! Don’t be intimidated by your lack of knowledge in the area of backyard landscaping as this is one of the easier plants to grow.

Strawberries can be planted at various times throughout the year, but you'll want to plant them at the best time to plant strawberries to maximize their growth potential.

Good luck with your own strawberry harvest! And please see other DIY tips for gardening available on this site.

As always, thank you for visiting and happy gardening!
