Fence Building Contractors

The search for reputable fence building contractors can be difficult if you don’t know where to start. You’ve decided you want to have outdoor fences installed in your yard, you have a rough idea of the material and style of fence that you’re interested in, and you know you want someone else to build it. How do you locate good contractors in your area? When you locate them, how do you know they’re “good”?

The best way, in my opinion, to identifying good fence building contractors, or any other type of contractors or home improvement tips and ideas, is to tour houses in your area. Find homes that have the types of fences installed that you like, and determine who did the installation.

I am interested in installing a cedar fence, for example. In my area, I have noticed two major fence building contractors who install these types of fences, A-1 and Badger Fence. Because of the number of houses that I’ve observed, I already know that A-1 is the company I’ll go with.

Finding good contractors can work particularly well using this method because you’ll find homes that have newer outdoor fences installed, and you’ll find homes that have older outdoor fences installed. This can help you in the decision making process, as you’ll be able to see how the proposed fence will stand the test of time.

If touring neighborhoods isn’t an option for you, start by asking around at work and friends and family. It always amazes me how much information people have, or someone who knows someone else, who has a good tip to share.

Start putting together a list of potential contractors from this information gathering process. Take a look through your local phonebook, and start visiting some of the companies that peak your interest. Some companies have websites that you can visit which can be helpful as well. Keep in mind that some of the best fence building contractors aren’t those with the best websites or the nicest showrooms. Good contractors spend their time building good fences, not putting on a good show! Keep this in mind when touring different facilities.

Narrow down your list to at least 3 that really interest you. Search the Better Business Bureau (opens new window) to make sure that there have been no complaints filed against the company.

Once the potential fence building contractors pass that test, ask each of them for names of previous customers who can be contacted for referrals. Good companies will usually have this as an option for current customers. I would suggest asking for recent and older customers to find out how the fence has held up over time. When contacting previous customers, consider the following questions:

1. Request to see the fence (of course).
2. What types of yearly maintenance has the fence required?
3. Have you noticed any problems with the fence since installation?
4. Where there any problems with the installation process?
5. How long did installation take?
6. If you had another fence installed, would you use this company again?

Once you’ve completed these simple steps, you should have a good idea of which of the contractors you’re leaning towards employing.

I hope this information helps you locate a reputable contractor in your area!
