Chain Link Fence Installation

Chain link fence installation isn’t about the glamour, it’s about the functionality, durability, cost effectiveness and lack of required maintenance of the product.

I don’t know about installing a chain link fence from personal experience, but I do know about removing a chain link fence, which is surprisingly very easy! Once the parts are disconnected, the fence is rolled up, the posts are hacked off or dug up, (I used a sawzall (opens new window)...very nice! although I did go through a few blades) and voila! No more fence!

Although I do have to say that digging up the fence posts can be difficult to impossible. The posts are generally set in concrete, due to their need to withstand the pull from the fencing material.

Based on how easy it was to remove this fence, installing a chain link fence isn’t really as intimidating as people think it is, and I was able to find some wonderful instructions for this at Chain link fence installation guide (opens new window). Keep in mind that you will need to be prepared to:

  • dig the post holes (one of the more tedious and strenuous parts of building a fence)
  • set the fence posts in concrete
  • rent a special machine that stretches the chain link material over the fence posts
You will not be able to do the stretching yourself without the use of the machine. For this reason, my Dad – Bob, who worked on building a wood fence at his last house, recommends that you contract with a professional for installation of this backyard landscaping project.

I agree with Bob. I don’t think I’d embark on this process myself, opting for professional installation.

When you are considering embarking on a do it yourself project, I think you have to weigh in as to whether or not it is really a good idea for you to go through the hassle of completing the task.

Considering the installation process:

  • are you familiar with this process?
  • do you have the necessary tools and equipment?
  • what is the cost of obtaining all of the necessary supplies?
  • do you have the time to complete this project?

Once you take all of those factors into consideration, perhaps it’s worth the installation fees to have a professional complete the job instead. They will do it in record time, it will be executed flawlessly, and you can sit back and enjoy it!

If you like the price and durability of the chain link fence, but aren’t real crazy about the way it looks, consider creating a home landscape plan that will disguise the look of the fence. The benefit of chain link fence installation is the fact that sunlight shines through it, so planting landscaping plants close to the fence will not be a problem.

The design of a chain link fence is also good for keeping small children and small pets inside the perimeter of your yard. Some fences can leave gaps at the bottom that make it easy for small dogs to get through, however chain link fence installation is such that animals should not be able to exit. (Well, unless it’s a very poorly deteriorated chain link fence, that is!)

Good luck to you on your chain link fence installation!
