Once you’ve completed those steps, the final step really sets the design of your fence. When building a privacy fence, you will attach the boards to your fence supports (2 X 4’s) in the desired style, such as thin, rough-edged boards to create a stockade, or flat panels that line up side by side, or flat panels that alternate between sides of the fence supports.
When creating a fence, such as a stockade, the boards should be placed directly next to each other so that there are no gaps in between.
As you’re lining up each board, make sure that you are checking that it is level. It would be very easy, because of the imperfections in each wood piece, for the entire project to start tilting one way or another.
Make your way, board by board, around the entire perimeter, starting at one end or the other.
You may apply stain and any paint to your fence either before or after the boards are up. It is easier to paint each board separately prior to placing on the fence supports, and then finish the project by touching up any areas that require it.
Building a fence is something that can be done by the average do it yourselfer, but there may be better options to consider.
Before you consider building a privacy fence, make sure you consider a living fence made from hedge plants. I can assure you that if it’s privacy you’re after, there is no better alternative! Not only does a living fence give you privacy, but it “absorbs” lots of the noise coming from neighbors, traffic or whatever. It’s a very good alternative, and an inexpensive, low maintenance one at that!
This is a picture of the living fence between mine and my neighbor’s yard. I LOVE these landscaping bushes! Do you know I’ve never met the neighbors on the other side of these bushes? I’m not antisocial, but I do have to admit that I like my privacy.Did I mention that a living fence is a more cost effective alternative?
Regardless of your decision, enjoy your well-deserved privacy!
