Looking for ideas on backyard landscaping
but don’t know where to start?

That’s how I felt when I wanted backyard landscaping ideas for my almost one acre lot. I had 2 main goals:

1) I wanted some ideas that would help me create the yard that I wanted without being overly complicated, and
2) I wanted a yard that doubled as my weekend retreat. Instead of driving several hours to a vacation home, I would build a vacation home right in my own backyard, and enjoy it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

The problem for me was that much of the information that I found in books and on the web focused on large-scale or overly-complex landscape designs and plant care. I wanted information that would help me create a landscape design for my yard, which wouldn’t be overly complicated, and would help me complete projects myself when I felt it was worth the effort.

I have created this web site to give others the information that I was looking for. The backyard landscaping ideas presented on this site will help you create your own landscape design. It will help you decide what features, such as garden structures and landscaping plants, you would like included in your yard. It will help you decide what aspects of your design concept you will be able to complete by yourself, and what may be more appropriately referred to a professional. I've included lots of information based on my own personal experience and the experiences of some of my friends and family, along with pictures to help bring the information to life. I have also done quite a bit of research on the web, and will include only those websites that I have reviewed and found to be particularly helpful. Many of the websites that I reference are those that I have purchased items from directly, or provide good detail on a specific topic.

I am not a professional landscaper, nor do I have special training in gardening or landscaping. I do love to spend time in my yard, and I have gained quite a bit of experience through trial and error. My focus has always been to create a landscape design that is as LOW MAINTENANCE as possible. If you create a wonderful backyard retreat, and then have to spend most of your time maintaining it, what good is it doing you? Words of wisdom I try to live by is to “Work smarter, not harder!”
